EU Directive for Data Protection, 1998

European Union (EU) Directive 95, Data Protection Directive establishes common rules for data protection among Member States of the EU in order to facilitate the free flow of personal data within the EU.

The Directive requires businesses in EU Member States to follow a set of rules that apply to the processing of all personal data.

While all Member States must comply with the Directive by October 1998, the Directive allows Member States 12 additional years to bring existing manual filing systems into conformity with the Directive.
