Identity Theft Act of 1998

In October 1998, Congress passed the Identity Theft and Assumption Deterrence Act of 1998 (Identity Theft Act) to address the growing problem of identity theft.

Identity theft can occur through a variety of means, and companies should be prepared to protect customers from unauthorized access to information that may enable a thief to obtain personal customer information. Companies that do not have a prudent identity theft response program in place may inadvertently aide in the identity theft. If such an incident occurs and goes undetected, it will create a negative lasting affect on the company's reputation.
